The animals that live(d) here at Ancient Spring Farm all have big personalities! Meet some of them here.
Even our beloved non-livestock pets have their own jobs to do!
Darcy
Darcy is the farm watchdog and chicken protector extraordinaire. She was born in New Mexico, lived in Colorado, and then traveled with three beloved chickens to the farm. Nothing gets past her, be it a squirrel, a delivery person, or the vulture that likes to sit on top of the chimney.
The Working Pets
Warlock
Warlock is a mustang who was born in the wild on the California/Nevada border in 2009. Having subsequently lived in Colorado, he's not too thrilled by the bugs and humidity here at the farm, although he certainly loves his big pastures! He's super smart and does hunter/jumper, trail riding, and driving. He'd love to have some horse friends but right now the goats are his buddies and followers.
Louie
You might think from this photo that Louie is one tough dude, and you'd be right. At somewhere around 16 years old, he's an impressively smart and resourceful barn cat! But he'll also melt into a love bug when he gets pets, rubs, and treats, which he requests regularly. Louie was born on the neighbor's property but has lived on the farm for many years.
Smokey
Smokey is younger, wily, and very friendly. But watch out for those teeth and claws if he decides he's had enough attention! It took a while for Smokey and Louie to warm up to each other but now they're hunting and treat-begging partners. He's kind of obsessed with the chickens but thankfully they're too big for him. Listen for his soft meow as he appears out of nowhere for some love!
2022: Ida (Welsummer) and Leona (Ameraucana) have been best friends since they came to the farm as day-old chicks.
2023: Frieda (blue-laced gold Wyandotte) used to lay brown eggs but now she lays white eggs! Koko (Taylor) (Easter Egger) originally lived in the mobile coop but in 2026 she decided to move into the main coop.
2025: Marge (Ameraucana), Josephine (Black Australorp), and Alice (Buff Orpington) fit in well with the older ladies. Alice even hatched and raised a chick - white lady Dot (barnyard special), who’s one of our best egg layers!
2026: Bernadette, Edna, and Marie (Midnight Majesty Marans) are all the same breed but each one looks different and so do their eggs!
Two funny little gents joined our flock of big ladies in 2026: Electro (frizzle) and Drumstick (naked neck). These guys crack us up and also tag-team to protect and feed the ladies.
We love our ladies very much and are heartbroken that free-range chickens just don’t always live all that long due to predators and other factors. They have so much fun and do so much good for the farm as they wander around eating insects, seeds, and all manner of other foods that we’ve decided to continue to let them live their best lives free (but always locked safely in their coops at night). Here are the ladies and gents that are with us now and the years they joined us…

The Pet Goats
We started out with two big dudes (Sid and Fred) but now we breed a small number of myotonic (fainting) goats and keep a couple as pets.
Sid and Fred
Sid (black and white) is a Boer goat who was born here in February 2020 when the prior owner had the farm. Sid’s best friend is Fred (brown and white). Fred is a Boer, Alpine, Nubian-cross goat who was born around the same time as Sid. Fred was obsessed with Warlock and got ornery whenever Warlock left his sight. In spring 2025, Sid and Fred went on a big adventure and moved to a new farm but they remain in our hearts at Ancient Spring Farm!
Johnny
In 2022, we hosted 29 adorable newly weaned fainting goat (myotonic goat) bucklings born to our good friends Lookout Mountain Goats. Two of those bucklings are now permanent residents of Ancient Spring Farm! We picked these boys for their good looks and big personalities. As with all of the bucklings, we named these two in relation to their moms' names.
Johnny's mom's name is Hot Topic. Who was in the news in summer 2022 and who played a pirate (pirates often have eye patches, right?) in some movies? That's right, Johnny Depp!
Chalky
Chalky's mom's name is Climber, and Chalky was the most agile and jumpiest of the fainting goat bucklings. When Chalky came to the farm, we laughed at the juxtaposition of his black balls (teehee) and his mostly white body. They reminded us of a rock climber's Chalk Bag (Chalky's full name). Alas, Johnny and Chalky had to give up those parts of themselves in order to live as pets on Ancient Spring Farm but we hope their good lives here will make up for that sacrifice!
The Breeding Goats
In summer 2023, we purchased four excellent female fainting goats from our friends Lookout Mountain Goats. That November, we bred the two older girls (Aon and Beinn Dubh) and started our small fainting goat (myotonic goat) breeding program. Here are our lovely past, present, and future breeding girls and their current babies. All our breeders are listed in the Myotonic Goat Registry.
Aon (Hot Item)
Aon (meaning one in Gaelic) is registered as Hot Item (mom is Hot Topic) and is Johnny's full sister! She and her friend Dubh are the original 2023 foundations of our fainting goat breeding program. On April 19, 2026, Aon had mostly white boy Trace (from Gaelic treas meaning three) and mini-me girl Catha (from Gaelic ceathair meaning four). Catha is staying at Ancient Spring Farm but Trace is for sale as an intact buckling.
Beinn Dubh (Mountain Top)
Aon's friend Beinn Dubh (meaning black mountain in Gaelic) is registered as Mountain Top (her mom is Mentone, named for a town in Alabama near Lookout Mountain) and is our other foundational doe. Aon and Dubh aren't at all related but look how similar their coloring is! Dubh is our lead doe and a calm and excellent mother. On April 1, 2026, Dubh gave birth to tri-color boy Ben (from Gaelic beinn sneachta meaning snowy mountain) and tan girl Lina (from Gaelic líne dubh meaning black line). Intact buckling Ben and Lina are both staying at Ancient Spring Farm.
Fabulocity
Fabulocity was one of our first two doelings. Her mom, Fabulous Felicity, had three babies and decided that taking care of two was enough. So Lookout Mountain Goats bottle-raised Fabulocity. On April 14, 2026, she had her own set of triplets! She was a great mom to all three so no bottles needed. Her 2025 son Fabuloso is actually 2026 Ben’s dad. Fabulocity’s 2026 tri-color daughter, Fable, is staying at Ancient Spring Farm but her two wethered black and white boys, Fabian (Italian for bean grower) and Fabbro (“Bro”, Italian for blacksmith) are for sale.
Flyer
Flyer was our other original doeling. It turns out she's Chalky's younger sister! Both Flyer and Chalky inherited a lucky (quirky) foot from their mom, Climber, and yet both (like their mom) are the most agile goats we have. They love to climb and jump on things! One of Flyer’s 2025 daughters, Caver, remains at Ancient Spring Farm. While Flyer didn’t get pregnant in November 2025 like the other does did, it appears she got knocked up by Ben in May or June so we’re anxiously awaiting her surprise kid(s), coming soon!
Downy
Downy (from beinn donn, meaning brown hill in Gaelic) is one of Dubh’s 2025 daughters. She’s very sweet, gentle, and beautiful. We may breed her in November 2026.
Caver
Caver is one of Flyer’s 2025 daughters. She used to be a spitfire but she loves food and has learned to remain calm and curious around the people who bring it to her! We may breed her in November 2026.
Lina (tan) and Ben (tri-color) are Dubh’s 2026 kids. Both will stay at Ancient Spring Farm to eventually breed. Lina is beautiful and small while Ben is confident and big. He’ll be a great herd sire!
The 2026 Goat Kids
Catha (half black, half white) and Trace (mostly white) are Aon’s 2026 kids. Catha will stay at Ancient Spring Farm to eventually breed but Trace is for sale and will make a great herd sire! Both are incredibly sweet and friendly kids.
Fabian (facing left) and Fabbro (facing right) are Fabulocity’s two 2026 boys. They’re good eaters like their mom! Both are wethered and for sale as nice pets.
Fable (tri-color) is Fabulocity’s 2026 blue-eyed girl. She’ll stay at Ancient Spring Farm to eventually breed.
Faerie (from feirin, meaning a little extra gift in Gaelic) came to us from Lookout Mountain Goats. Faerie’s mom, Gift, is elderly and didn’t have milk for her kids so LMG started her on a bottle and we finished. Faerie will stay at Ancient Spring Farm to eventually breed.
